Caring for Citrus Trees in Phoenix

Citrus trees are a staple in both residential and commercial landscaping in Phoenix. Oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruits are just a few of the citrus fruits that thrive in Phoenix’s dry and hot climate. Here’s how you can maintain your citrus trees.

Watering

Your watering area should be a foot wider than the canopy of your citrus trees as this is how far the roots grow. Rather than watering your tree for a few minutes daily, water your trees heavily every one to two weeks in the summer and three to four weeks in the winter. Water should reach around two feet into the soil.

Fertilizing

Fertilize your citrus tree three times a year.

Suckering

Suckers are growths that literally suck the energy from healthy branches on top of the tree. Suckers are located on the graft of the tree, around four to twelve inches above soil line. If you see any growth below the graft or an obvious change in the bark, remove it.

Pruning

Pinch off blooms so your citrus tree can mature before producing its fruit, and pinch back tips of new growth to stimulate branching. Don’t prune in the winter. The best time to prune is February and March, while it’s not freezing and the heat hasn’t hit Phoenix yet.
