Why is Sustainable Landscaping Important?

Humanity’s long tradition of development at the expense of nature has created environmental conditions that are growing increasingly more hostile to life as we know it on this planet. We love nature so much that we work in it every day, and we strive to do our part to honor and celebrate the environment with every landscape we design.

1. Replenishing Groundwater

The amount of surface that repels water is minimized to preserve the area’s natural hydro-logic cycle. For instance, gravel might be used on a walkway instead of pavement. This way, groundwater is replenished instead of evaporating, running into the sewers, or causing erosion.

2. Saving Energy

From designing landscapes that shade and cool buildings, to using state-of-the-art equipment and alternative fuels, landscapers can save themselves and their clients energy expenses.

3. Planting Native Flora

Care is taken to plant native and non-invasive species of flora which are naturally acclimatized to the local weather and soil conditions. As a bonus, these plants are less costly to maintain and less likely to fail. In Arizona, this amounts to using less water and soil amendments.

4. Avoiding Soil Contamination

Instead of using man-made chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides, organic practices are implemented, leading to the development of healthy soil which hasn’t been contaminated by dangerous chemicals.

5. Supporting Pollinators

Butterflies, hummingbirds and honeybees are supported by plants that provide nutrition and habitat.
