Sage Wisdom: All About Landscaping with Sage

What is Sage?

Sage plants are a delightful addition to your Phoenix landscape. When we talk about sage, we typically mean species of plants classified as Salvia. (No, not the psychoactive drug!) Salvia officinalis, also known as culinary sage, tastes delightful in Mediterranean dishes and can thrive in Arizona herb gardens. Yet some of the plants commonly referred to as “sage” are not Salvia at all — truly a riddle for the sages to ponder. Here, we’ll focus on sage varieties for landscaping.

Sage Varieties for Arizona Landscapes

Drought-tolerant, heat-tolerant and sun-loving, sage is a wise addition to any landscaping plan. With a variety of leaves, flowers, and sizes from 3 to 8 feet, there’s a sage solution for most every design. Here are some of the varieties often used in Phoenix:

Leucophyllum genus

Texas Sage: Texas Sage grows up to 5 feet tall and has oval silver-grey leaves that are fuzzy to the touch. Dramatic tubular flowers in shades of pink and purple bloom in summer and fall.

Cloud sage varieties include the spring green and pink Green Cloud Sage, the pastel purple Silver Cloud Sage and the olive green and pink Heavenly Cloud Sage. These boast abundant flowers that bloom multiple times per year.

Chihuahuan Sage: With a height and width of up to 5 feet, this evergreen shrub has a loose and spiky form with small olive-colored leaves and fragrant white or lavender flowers.

Langman’s or Lynn’s Legacy Sage has soft green foliage with a fine texture. This 5-foot sage blooms with masses of lavender flowers from summer to fall.

Salvia genus

Mexican Bush Sage grows to 3-4 feet with purple or white flower spikes, and can thrive in part sun. Leaves are long and tapered.

Autumn Sage: This small shrub flowers in red with small green leaves. Hybrids have variegated leaves and flowers in a wide range of colors from orange to purple.

Chaparral Sage: This fragrant shrub has small leaves and intricate purple flowers. It thrives in rocky soil and naturally shapes into a mound.
