Colorful Landscape Plants for Arizona Gardens

You probably know that xeriscaping is an excellent way to save water. What you might not know is the wide variety of colorful plants available. Here are some of the most popular colorful flowering plants for Phoenix landscapes.

Globe Mallow: a small sprawling shrub which has orange or pink flowers in late spring.

Bougainvillea: a lovely woody vine with flowers that can be magenta, pink, red or purple.  It can be trained into bushes or ground cover.

Oleander: a fast growing large bush which is popular as divider or hedge. From May through October, clusters of flowers appear in either pink, white, coral or red.

Birds of Paradise: These popular shrubs appear in three varieties in Arizona: Tropical, which grows upright with large orange flowers like bird beaks; Red Mexican, which becomes a rangy bush covered with smaller orange and yellow flowers; and Evergreen Mexican, which produces clusters of small yellow flowers.

Hibiscus: larger bushes which have dark leaves and big, tropical flowers that come in a wide variety of colors including white, pink, red, orange peach, yellow and purple.

Sage: Available in sizes from three to six feet, sage plants have leaves ranging in color from silver to deep green and flowers that are often purple but can also be red, pink, blue or white.

Prickly Pear: these flat pad cactus come in a variety of sizes and shapes. The pads themselves can be green or purple with contrasting spines. They add not only an interesting shape to your landscape, but also bright pink or yellow flowers and then colorful fruits that range from yellow to purple.
