3 Arizona Winter Plants
Arizona is experiencing quite the cold weather recently. This may lead local residents with particularly green thumbs to wonder—is there anything I can plant for the winter? The answer is, yes!
Geraniums
Geraniums are easy to grow, colorful, and smell wonderful! They grow in both bedding plants and pots. Geraniums love the sun which is convenient because in Arizona, it’s still sunny in the winter. During the winter, they need much less water than usual. However, gardeners should be careful to not let the roots dry out. Geraniums do not need to be fertilized in the winter and can be re-potted in the spring if necessary.
Petunias
Petunias are a popular Arizona floral; you’ve probably seen them everywhere! They’re a great fall and winter plant, and unlike geraniums, should be planted with fertilizer. They come in a variety of colors: red, pink, yellow, purple, and white. While these lovely flowers can handle the winter, it’s still better to shelter them from the wind. The best part about petunias is that they are tolerant to wet weather, which is fantastic for those sporadic showers in the Arizona winter.
Snapdragons
Snapdragons very easy to plant and famous for their interesting features—they’re pressed on their sides and resemble open mouths. Because of this, only bumblebees are able to pollinate them. These beautiful flowers are perfect for the winter because they grow better in cooler months.
